3 Key Differences Between Self-Development and Spiritual Formation

In my mid 20s, I started focusing on self-development.

It was a point where I was feeling lost after university and I was surrounded by others in my local church who were interested too — one lent me his copy of the classic Getting Things Done by David Allen. But it also came out of my desire to use my talents wisely for God.

At first, I thought these field crossed over perfectly. Over time, I realised that while some parts are similar, there are major differences. Here are three.

1: The Reason

Self-development is all about you — it's in the name.

We pursue it to enhance our attributes, careers, relationships etc. Spiritual formation is primarily about God (and secondarily about others.). It may benefit us, but it's likely to cost us what the world values.

Warning: Don't pursue spiritual formation if you want a "good life" by the world's standards.

2: The Process

Spiritual formation is driven by the Holy Spirit.

Yes, we do have a role in surrendering to the Spirit's influence and putting ourselves in the position to be transformed. But that's arguably only via the Spirit's work in the first place! Self-development is all driven by your own strength.

3: The Transformation

In self-development, we become "the best versions of ourselves".

In spiritual formation, we become more christlike. Sometimes, these overlap but they can be diametrically opposed too. Christlikeness includes giving up things we love, because we love Christ more.

Picking the right path

Self-development can come out of a noble goal, but spiritual growth is better.

Sometimes it looks the same from the outside, but these three factors are incredibly important.

Take the better path and focus on your spiritual growth.
